"The cause of the Greeks has heretofore appealed to us, as that of a struggling and suffering nation. They have bled at every pore in the cause of liberty and the rights of man. We, as inheritors of a freedom brought by the blood of our fathers, felt the appeal. Our deeds proved that we truly felt it. Again our domestic sympathies were touched. We heard of the Grecian widow, wandering with her helpless offspring over the devastated hills of her now barren country. She had no protector- for her husband had been butchered before her eyes: she had no shelter- for her cottage had been burned: and now her babes were hungry and cold- and she had neither food nor clothing to give them. As women, we felt the appeal, and our hands ministered to their necessities. We recollect the good work with satisfaction; and the circumstance that we have cared for them; that we have laboured for them, gives us a continued interest in their welfare. "

-Emma Willard, 1833

The American Hellenic Foundation of Western PA, the Greek Nationality Room Committee, and the European Art Center of Greece (EUARCE), with this tribute to the lesser known Philhellenes, are closing the chapter on the Celebration of the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution.

The Greek Struggle for Independence, unlike many other rebellions in history, was unique in that it raised the sensitivity of the entire Western world. People in all walks of life in Europe, Russia, and America, rose to help the Struggle. From royalty, to people of the court, intellectuals, and everyday people, a tide rose to bring all kinds of aid to the Greek people and revolutionaries. Food, clothing, war material, money. Much of this story remains untold, and much remains unknown. A growing corpus of knowledge has been curated in
museums and permanent exhibits.

As we close our celebrations and tribute to the Bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, we come together with sister communities of Western Pennsylvania to offer a tribute to the until now unknown
"1826 Greek Relief Committee of Pittsburgh" as well as to the lesser known heroines, Philhellene Women, who served as a critical backbone to the Philhellenic movements across Europe, the trans-Caucasus, and America.

Each of the events is "virtual" and accessible by clicking on the links below, the sidebar at the top right, or the master menu of this page.

These events constitute a "first" for the Diaspora. The participation of Philhellene women in the Revolution of 1821 is not particularly known and more importantly the discovery of a group of industrialists of Western Pennsylvania who came together to aid the Greek Revolution is a historical first.

We are honored to present these "lesser known" and until now unknown aspects of the Greek Struggle for Independence.
