"The Choice"
A Proposal for the Bicentennial of American Independence
Nikos Korkantzis

“The Choice” was a proposal by the renowned Greek-American sculptor-artist Nikos Korkantzis of late-blessed memory to craft a monument for the observance of the Constitution in time for the Bicentennial of the US Constitution. The purpose was to reconnect Americans’ association wth the Enlightenment and to connect America’s past with a hopeful future.

The monument would honor the US Constitution. The main figures would be George Washington and Pericles along with portraits of other historical persons including the representatives of the Philadelphia Convention, persons from the participating states, patriots, writers, and philosophers influential to the democratic movements resulting from America’s birth to the Constitution of 1787.

The proposed locations of the monument was either Philadelphia, Washington DC, or the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The monument, unfortunately, was never realized and Nikos Korkantzis moved on to other projects during his lifetime, projects that received international acclaim and award.

Having unearthed his proposal, and the documents underlying it, we now present them for the first time to the public, as part of our celebration and commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.

May they inspire others, current and future, to possible revive the concept and bring it to fruition.
